In this posting on www.VelvelOnNationalAffairs.com,
Dean Lawrence R. Velvel of MSL discusses bribery, honesty, and the government. Velvel
says you cannot separate the acts of bribing and carrying out the bribe from
the constitutionally protected act of voting on the floor and the
constitutionally protected reasons for the vote. Courts aught to recognize
this, and that the unusual question is the need for honesty in government. But
they donât and indeed allow legalized bribery called contributions. The upshot
is we have a very the dishonest government.

How Can The Federal Courts Sentence Innocents to Death?

In a recent posting on www.VelvelOnNationalAffairs.com,
Dean Lawrence R. Velvel of the Massachusetts School of Law discusses a recent
federal court decision which he considers immoral. In the case, a federal
appeals court allowed the government to prevent terminally ill patients, for
whom no standard treatment works, from having access to experimental drugs which
are the only conceivable hope for saving their lives. Velvel says that this
horrific decision stands the Constitution and our whole system of government on
its head by failing to protect people from the misdeeds of government and
instead allowing government to order what is in effect a death sentence for the
innocent terminally ill. Velvel compares the judges who made the decision to
the proverbial German judges of the Nazi era.*

The Need For Reform In Legal Education

Associate Dean Michael L. Coyne of the Massachusetts School
of Law, in a recent article in Massachusetts
Lawyerâs Weekly, compared the teaching methods of todayâs legal education,
often unfavorably, to those of medicine. In the article, Coyne took issue with
the practices of legal education and requirements for ABA accreditation.

Coyne states that such practices fail to âproduce graduates
who, upon passing the bar exam, would be ready to contribute to their community
and âhit the ground running.ââ In suggesting reform, Coyne states that legal
education should follow the model presented by medical school: ârather than
reading about legal cases and discussing legal principles in an academic
vacuum, they would possess a clear understanding of how these principles
translate to practical application.â

So - you, less developed country, want to succeed financially.

So â you, less developed country, want to succeed financially. You must follow the American structure. We swear it will help you. With the <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">United States</place></country-region> expanding its economy, Latin American countries have become a focal point to receive a financial reconstruction. The IMF and the World Bank have compelled <place w:st="on">Latin America</place> to make structural adjustments to follow the American model. The idea is to encourage a more progressive national structure. One must ask which nations receive the benefits. Western nations receive lower costs on goods while Latin American countries watch the foundation of their primarily agricultural economy driven out by an inability to compete with the invading corporations. You decide.

Mr. Commissioner, Michael Vick Must Be Suspended !

Professors Diane Sullivan and Holly Vietzke, of the
Massachusetts School of Law, recently wrote an op-ed piece demanding the
suspension of NFL quarterback Michael Vick after being indicted on charges of
animal cruelty. This piece, published in several newspapers (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Hartford
Courant, Lowell Sun, and Andover
Townsman), points to the recent inconsistencies of NFL commissioner Roger
Goodell in his punishment of NFL players.

Goodell has said, âThe highest standards of conduct must be
met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not
a right.â In the past, say Sullivan and Vietzke, Goodell has followed the
direction given in this statement, suspending players like Tank Johnson for
eight games after violating his probation on gun charges. Now, Goodell diverts
from his own called ââstandards of conduct.ââ Vickâs ghastly acts tarnish the
NFL, continued the two professors, yet has not sufficed in suspension. One is
left asking whether Vickâs popularity, âsport[ing] the league's second-highest
selling jersey,â has anything to do with Goodellâs decision not to suspend.

Do You Hate Me Because of My Freedom?

Do you hate me because of my freedom? Thomas Bender, author of A Nation Among Nations: Americaâs Place in World History, sat down with Dean Lawrence R. Velvel of the Massachusetts School of Law to discuss the reasoning for foreign hatred toward the <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">United States</country-region></place>. They determine that Americans are loathed simply because of an inability to listen to global concerns. American arrogance has fueled great abhorrence from other nations. Regularly, the <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">United States</place></country-region> pledges to listen to global concerns from other nations; instead, it cannot remain silent long enough to hear anything but itself.
What Do You Mean There is a History Outside of America?

If a nation is interconnected to American history but the <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">United States</country-region></place> does not pay attention to it â does the historical interconnection actually exist? American history is seen as a one sided series of events and is often thought to neither rely nor involve any other nation. A modern example of this being <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Iraq</place></country-region>. We turn on the television, pick up a paper, listen to the radio and find the number of Americans injured and killed in <place w:st="on"><country-region w:st="on">Iraq</country-region></place>. On the same media outlet, the other sidesâ numbers are rarely disclosed, as it is not a concern to the mediaâs audience. The <country-region w:st="on"><place w:st="on">United States</place></country-region> needs to understand the view from its enemyâs perspective. If such a perception remains detached from American understanding, an authentic portrayal of events will be lost and history will become fictional.

Hey Blue Collar, you are an impediment to my civil rights. The working class has become the victim of social discrimination.
Increasing The Size of The Supreme Court - Liberal Savior?

AMERICAN SOCIETY V. ROME

Is American society destined to the same fate that befell <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Rome? This is the question analyzed in a new book by Cullen Murphy Are We <city w:st="on"></city><place w:st="on"></place>Rome? The Fall of <city w:st="on"></city>Rome And The Fate Of <place w:st="on"></place><country-region w:st="on"></country-region>America. Writing about the book, Dean Lawrence R. Velvel of the Massachusetts School of Law, focuses on the most âpertinent parallelsâ between the two empires.

One such example, according to Velvel was that âThe Romans were arrogant,â much in the same way <place w:st="on"></place><country-region w:st="on"></country-region>America is today. As <city w:st="on"></city>Rome sought to export its culture and system of government so does <country-region w:st="on"></country-region><place w:st="on"></place>America today â despite the fact that the recipients of such beneficence - both then and now, might not require or want such imperial assistance. As <city w:st="on"></city>Rome expanded its military presence beyond its natural borders so does <place w:st="on"></place><country-region w:st="on"></country-region>America today. The <place w:st="on"></place><country-region w:st="on"></country-region>United States maintains some 700 bases oversees and countless others unknown but to Pentagon insiders. Blinded by arrogance, with a total inability to recognize the point of view of other nations, <country-region w:st="on"></country-region>America, as <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Rome before it, is headed on a path to destruction.

There is a New Wave of Discrimination on The American Front!

Do I have to lose my cultural identity to succeed in todayâs society? Kenji Yoshino, author of Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights, sat down with Dean Lawrence R. Velvel of the Massachusetts School of Law to discuss modern discrimination. The way Americans discriminate has evolved from the intolerance of the past. The traditional categorized prejudice is said to be retired, succeeded by a more conduct-based discrimination. Todayâs discrimination targets all that refuse to convert to the mainstream perception of behavior. Americans seek a generic existence for those allowed to succeed in todayâs society and punish individualism.

Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg Discusses the Question of Whether High Price Equals Better Health Care

Does high price equal high quality in health care? Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg, co-author of Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results, in an interview on the television show Books of Our Time with host Lawrence R. Teisberg states that health care treatments are not equal; distinguished only by cost and thus the focus on cost reduction is unfounded.
HOWARD GARDNER ON TODAY'S YOUTH AND ETHICS

Are today's youth unethical? Howard Gardner, author of Five Minds for the Future, sat down for an interview on the television show Books of Our Time with host Lawrence R. Velvel the Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law to discuss the ethical decision making of our society's younger members. Howard Gardner states that youth today have perceived that ethical issues are to influence behavior later in life and not in the presence. They see ethics as standards that are required when they begin to make money and have professions. Thus, the youth have become content with the idea of cutting corners and thus often justify leaving ethical behavior out of their lives. Howard Gardner believes that today's youth live in the present and do not look to the consequences of their unethical behavior on the future: get it when you can and sweep the problems under the rug.

Excuse me doctor, what really motivates you? Howard Gardner the author of Five Minds for the Future, and the creator of Multiple Intelligences sat down for an interview on the television show Books of Our Time with host Lawrence R. Velvel, Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law to discuss the medical profession and its future. <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Gardner begins by discussing the power of American doctors, as they are not easily replaceable like many other professions. With societal dependence being the backbone of this power, <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Gardner discusses the question that each prospective doctor must ask himself or herself: their motivations. Motivations can be perverted by money and big business. <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Gardner warns us these perversions can be detrimental to a profession like medicine.
HOWARD GARDNER ON ETHICS AND POWER

You have to do it right, but I don't have to. Howard Gardner, author of Five Minds for the Future, in an interview on the television show Books of Our Time with host Lawrence R. Velvel (visit his blog at www.velvelonnationalaffairs.com) Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law, discussed the hypocrisy exhibited by today's leaders. Howard Gardner suggests, the older [individuals] established in a position of power, the greater the penalties should be for unethical behavior. Howard Gardner continues with the idea that today there is not set standard for determining a penalty for these individuals. Rather, they receive assurance from the world that they did nothing wrong. In this interesting interview, Howard Gardner raises an intriguing question: what is society showing if it does not make one take responsibility for their actions and the presence of feeble penalties for unacceptable behavior? Watch the whole interview at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7803142962405524835&q=Howard+Gardner&total=68&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=3

HOWARD GARDNER ON HIS MULITIPLE INTELLIGENCES THEORY

What is the M.I. theory? Howard Gardner, author of Five Minds for the Future, discussed his multiple intelligence theory on the television show Books of Our Time with host Lawrence R. He suggests that such terms are far too generic as each individual is the combination of what he calls multiple intelligences (M.I.). He suggests that each skill that one is good or bad at, whether chess or academic pursuits, is a separate intelligence and should be observed as such. <place w:st="on"></place><city w:st="on"></city>Gardner's theory revolutionizes the human perception of intelligence. Watch the whole interview at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7803142962405524835&q=Howard+Gardner&total=68&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=3
